Description Prakash Chitnis 2011-10-12 10:22:58 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0

a) I have installed OpenSUSE 11.4 (64 bit) with both Gnome and KDE Desktop. The keyboard menu at the login, does not show Indian languages i.e. Hindi, Marathi. The version installed with OpenSUSE 11.2 (64 bit) had these layouts.

b) I then tried the command with Gnome running, under YaST2 - Contol Center - Hardware Group - "System Key Board Layout. The keyboards are not available here also.

c) I logged into KDE and checked under System Settings - Input Devices - Keyboard. I was able to select Hindi keyboards Hindi Wx and Hindi Bolnagri. However, the problem in these keyboards is that all the Hindi vowels except "आ" are missing. Also the onscreen keyboard does not display the Hindi alphabets which makes the entry of hindi text tedious.

I filed a bug report no. 661298 with Gnome in respect of (a) and (b) and was advised that the problem had nothing to do with Gnome and should file bug report with SUSE!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select login name
2.Select keyboard layout icon on the panel and look for Indian/Indic keyboard.
3.
Actual Results:
Options not available.

Expected Results:
To view and select Hindi Keyboard layout.

Well, we do not offer indian keyboard layout in YaST, but I guess we could add it.

Stanislav, do you know if there's kbd map for (probably) Hindu? If there's not, we could probably just create a link to us.map.gz just like with e.g. khmer.map.gz and focus at X11 layout only.

(Prakash: please report problem c separately as KDE bug)

This has been discussed again and again. Usually about twice a year. There's also anopenSUSE feature request open for this.

Closing as such.
