Description Daniel Barthel 2011-10-23 12:17:47 UTC
the grafical autoconfig fails with nvidia grafic and give error "Failed to load module "nvidia" (no module named "nvidia")" and "failed to create screen resources" - the text-based autoconfig works, but grafical glitches, like a black screen with green stripe in the middle during the boot still exist

but this did not work so i went back to the nouveau but also this causes the probles as mentioned above
Comment 12 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-25 09:19:51 UTC
the log of the nvidia install s from trying to install nvidia the hard way, but i only could load suse in text-modus after this.

with nouveau back i still see grafical problems and the problem that there is no nvidia module
Comment 13 Frederic Crozat 2011-10-25 09:41:20 UTC

and don't play with priorities
Comment 15 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-26 09:24:46 UTC
stephan, i dont PLAY with priorities, but if the grafic is not working, this is a important problem and dont earn priority "none"! no wonder if the inventor of Gnome in an interview said that the Linux desktop has no future!! even opensuse is free u should not treat people like that. many ppl use nvidia grafic. i dont knew what makes u thinking a non-working nvidia grafic needs to have priority "none" but anyways. good luck
Comment 16 Stephan Kulow 2011-10-26 09:51:21 UTC
None means "unrated by the developer". As this bug has no developer yet, this is exactly right.
Comment 17 Andreas Jaeger 2011-10-27 09:38:38 UTC
Daniel, is this an update from an installation that used the nvidia driver?
Comment 18 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-27 10:51:36 UTC
Andreas, i performed a clean new installation of opensuse 12.1 including formating the linux partitions. with this install the nouveau display-driver got installed but the grafical autoconfig failed with this and complained about an missing nvidia moudule also i had different problems with my grafic, such as black screens (with cursor) and crashes of crafic. so i tryed to install the nvidia driver manually, but something went wrong there too, the seemed to be installed, but not loaded so grafic went very slow.
Comment 19 Andreas Jaeger 2011-10-27 11:03:51 UTC
Stefan, any ideas why the clean install uses the nvidia module?
Comment 20 Stefan Dirsch 2011-10-27 11:57:35 UTC
(In reply to comment #19)
> Stefan, any ideas why the clean install uses the nvidia module?

It only tries to use "nvidia" if somebody installed the driver himself. Otherwise it falls back to "nouveau", then "nv" (if "nomodeset" set and GPU still supported), then "fbdev" (unless generic framebuffer disabled manually), then "vesa".

Seems the driver has been installed manually and kernel module not being installed or installed to the wrong place.
Comment 21 Stefan Dirsch 2011-10-27 12:00:38 UTC
Therefore closing as INVALID.
Comment 22 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-28 11:39:46 UTC
as said, i only tryed to install the "nvidia" manually, because the "nouveau", which got installed by standart was not working correct.

but i also dont knew why the grafical autoconfig failed and mentioned nvidia, after i formated the harddrive.

so is the bug realy resaolved? i dont see it as invalid.
Comment 23 Stefan Dirsch 2011-10-28 12:19:20 UTC
The bug was about a broken autoconfig, not at all about nouveau driver behaviour.
Comment 24 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-28 12:29:58 UTC
(In reply to comment #23)
> The bug was about a broken autoconfig, not at all about nouveau driver
> behaviour.

because the GRAFICAL autoconfig failed in my installation as the nouveau driver got used as deafult by the kernel. the GRAFICAL autoconfig failed and complained about an unkown grafic card and switchet to the text-based autoconfig.

i guess if not nouveau driver would be used and if the correct nvidia driver would be used by the kernel, also the GRAFICAL autoconfig would work! so maybe the bug should be opened again!
Comment 25 Stefan Dirsch 2011-10-28 12:39:08 UTC
Please read again comment #20. Thanks.
Comment 26 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-28 12:43:02 UTC
maybe i did not describe exactly, so i will correct:

1st.: i installed suse 12.1 on a clean device (formating the device using yast fro the install)
2nd.: the GRAFICAL autoconfig failed in this install and complained about an non supported or unknown grafic card and switched to text-mode, which worked.
3rd.: the running system had the "nouveau" driver installed, but this did not work correctly
4rd: i tryed to install the nvidia driver manually because "nouveau" driver was not working in the running system, but this manuall install failed (therefore the logs u see above)

but nevertheless in the very first installl, i did not specificate any special driver and it was an clean install, in which the GRAFICAL autoconfig failed with an error message (i dont rember the exact text of this) about an unknown or unsupported grafic card
Comment 27 Stefan Dirsch 2011-10-28 13:09:41 UTC
So 3 different issues are reported in one bug. This is not going to work. I suggest to begin with problem 1:

Here I need the exact text of the error message.

sorry, i cant rember on the exact text right now. i created a new bug for this single problem as bug 7277055 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727055) and provited there hwinfo --gfxcard, maybe this helps. else i will install 12.1 rc1 again and provide the exact error message
Comment 29 Daniel Barthel 2011-10-31 10:27:58 UTC
i installed opensuse 12.1 again. i formated my device and performed a clean install. the error with the failing of the GRAFICAL autoconfig happened again.

the error-message is:

the graphical oberfläsche could not be started. either the required packages were not installed (minimal installation) or the graphics card is not supported in an appropriate manner
