Description Forgotten User --EoyBps8f 2011-11-03 09:21:47 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1

I used tumbleweed with 11.4, including kernel 3.1 and there was no issue.

After dupping 11.4 to 12.1 I get a black screen while booting on my DELL notebook with intel graphics chipset. As soon as X is started the screen shows some content.

If I switch to tty1 I do not see any splash or the last boot messages but just a normal login.

Using nomodeset helps for booting but results in a low resolution for X.

Since bug 669798 states that it happens with any kernel > .37 I do not think it is the same issue.

Reproducible: Always

I have exactly the same problem with a HP Compaq 2510p (Intel GM965 graphics). Unfortunately, the installation (from DVD) is also affected and you have to use nomodeset.

Same here with HP Compaq 2510p.
Comment 5 Adam Spiers 2011-12-28 20:14:24 UTC
Same here on the first (and only) three machines I installed 12.1 on, all with different hardware - details are in bug 722476 comment #6.
Comment 6 Adam Spiers 2011-12-28 20:57:50 UTC
After several hours of googling I finally found a solution: boot with i915.modeset=1 rather than with nomodeset. I also removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf*

I'm really surprised this isn't being given more attention, because it's a complete show-stopper on a wide range of hardware. I think it should *at least* be listed on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Most_annoying_bugs_12.1

Comment 8 Mark Goldstein 2012-02-03 08:04:20 UTC
I have the same issue with HP Compaq 6910P, Intel 965 Express.
Comment 9 Mark Goldstein 2012-02-03 08:32:38 UTC
In my case using i915.modeset=1 as recommended in Comment 6 does not help. I still have empty screen (backlit) and have to guess when to enter the encrypted partition password (fortunately I only encrypted one partition, so it is still possible to enter right passphrase and continue booting).
Comment 10 John Carrick Smith 2012-02-17 18:03:13 UTC
Also occurs intermittently on Dell Inspiron 6400 with Intel 945GM chipset. Happens with 3.1.9-1.4-desktop on openSuSE 12.1 and also 3.1.0 on 11.4.
Comment 13 Egbert Eich 2012-03-27 06:16:54 UTC
Please give KOTD or Tumbelweed a try.
If the problem still exist:
1. To rule out splash screen issues use splash=off as a boot option.
2. Please add drm.debug=0x4 to the boot options to get a better debugging output and attach the output of 'dmesg' right after booting.

I have installed kernel 3.3.0-4-desktop from KOTD with 12.1 and the problem appears to be solved for that.

Thanks. John
Comment 15 Egbert Eich 2012-03-27 19:19:17 UTC
Ok, since KOTD helps in this case we should be able to close this as FIXED (with KOTD) soon :)

John, thanks for testing :)

Will set this to NEEDINFO to the original reporter to see if he can resolve his isue with KOTD, too.

Closing?

I had the same problem on my Lenovo 3000 N 100 with Intel 945 GM graphic chip.
A solution in my case was to load the kernelmodule i915 into the initial ramdisk.

I add the module i915 to " etc/sysconfig/kernel " section " INITRD_MODULES "
via YaST ( Editor für /etc/sysconfig ) System/Kernel/INITRD_MODULES

Yep, it helped in my case too. Thanks!

This report is against openSUSE 12.1 which is no longer under maintenance. If
you are able to reproduce it with openSUSE 13.1 or openSUSE Factory, please
re-open and reset the the "Product" field to the appropriate release.
