Description Huliyar Nataraj 2011-11-23 12:38:34 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/14.0.835.202 Safari/535.1

I have a Macbook Pro 7.1 with an intel chip and nvidia graphic card. I upgraded today from 11.4 to 12.1 KDE environment. In 11.4 also, I had shutdown issues (such as the screen flickering several times before shutting down) and I could never reboot (It use to get stuck flickering for ever). However, after upgrading to 12.1, my laptop simply does not shutdown. It flickers continuosly for minutes and does not shut down. I have added Nvidia respos while upgrading the system, for no avail.

Can someone help me resolve this issue?

PS : When I run Mac OS (using an external harddisk) it shuts down perfectly with out any flickering. So, it is not the hardware issue. I have installed all Nvidia drivers by including the repos.

Thanks in advance.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Login to the system
2. Press turn off the computer or restart
3. After a while, it starts flickering, does not shut down until and unless I shutdown hardway.
Actual Results:
Screen does not shutdown. A green screen appears and dims the light hundreds of times without shutting down for minutes. When shutdown from the boot level 3, with shutdown -r now, it shuts down smoothly and fast.

Expected Results:
It should shutdown in a smooth way and fast. It should not flicker.

The issue may be with the graphic drivers. I am using nvidia drivers.

I donot have much support, as I am using mac and running opensuse on it.

Unfortunately we can't track any NVIDIA driver bugs filed against
openSUSE in Novell's bugzilla. Please complain directly to NVIDIA.
Thanks.

May be it is a driver problem, but there are others with shutdown problems.

-> So there is no need to see your shutdown problems as nvidia driver problems. Only the flickering seems to be unique to you. Not the shutdown problem.

I set this as duplicate of an earlier report which focus on shutdown problems.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-> The flickering itself shut also be not there.

You can file a ticket as describded here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_169.09.html

They only want e-mail tickets and have no open bugtracker -> seems to be feared of that:-)

There is a closed bugtracker as far as I can see when you register as developer:

Read on this in the nvidia forum:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=205897
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a hint for next time hardware getting:

On ati there are some steps further:

http://ati.cchtml.com/

That is not setup by them, but they have tendencies to occupy it.

-> last time I have red a comment from an ati developer I have red that the bugtracker is from them -> which is a bad lie!
