Description Forgotten User g1R4ct0Dvq 2012-09-19 18:08:49 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/15.0

I suffer from bug #779136, with the result that my X server dies upon startup. I would have expected that this new plymouth thing would still let me enter the text console after X died, but I am unable to do that: The keyboard seems to be completely locked up (pressing NumLock does not change the led status, for example) and pressing either ESC or ALT+F1/F2/.. does not seem to do anythin.

I cannot tell whether this is due to X failing or "plymouth".

Other than that, the system is up and running and I can ssh in just fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Suffer from X bug, X server dies upon startup
Actual Results:
Plymouth splash screen is visible, cannot enter text console, system is unresponsive to keyboard

Expected Results:
The system should offer me the text-console automatically after an X crash, IMHO.
An error message of some kind would be bonus.

From what is reported, I can not determine if this is a plymouth bug. I myself am also suffering from the X bug, but plymouth ends in a black screen. As soon as I press a key, then I get a login prompt.

However if I perform then an init 3 and init 5, my whole system locks up.

Please let me know which displaymanager you are using, which plymouth version you have. Are you able to press Esc during the plymouth splash to see more details ?

Be aware that if you boot in runlevel 5 (graphical environment) the system is expecting that the displaymanager (KDM, GDM, lightdm, etc) ends the plymouth splash. Only in runlevel 3 systemd will take care of this.

Is this still an issue as that the Xorg bug seemed to have been resolved ?
