Description Forgotten User VCcZRydX6t 2014-10-23 12:32:34 UTC
User-Agent:       Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0
Build Identifier: mariadb-client-10.0.14-1.1.x86_64

Over at the MariaDB bug tracker I reported the problem, that after updating the mariadb-client to 10.0.14 control sequences (control+r/left/right/...) no longer work.

This is due to an license incompatibility between the MariaDB client and libreadline 6. Instead the MariaDB client now uses libedit as a fallback if available which hasn't be found / used before due to a bug in its detection in the MariaDB build system. Due to this bug the bundled libreadline 5 was always used when building the clients if now suitable OS version of libreadline < 6 was found.

For details please check https://mariadb.atlassian.net/browse/MDEV-6912

I am not sure if this is the correct place to report this problem. If it is not please point me to the correct location.

Christian

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. update to mariadb-client package >= 10.0.14
2. start the command line client
3. try to use control sequences
Actual Results:
* pressing control+r nothing happens
* pressing control+left/right print ;5D/C

Expected Results:
* pressing control+r should open the history search
* pressing control+left/right should move the cursor one word to the left/right
Comment 1 Jazz Fan 2015-07-15 08:57:33 UTC
After the recent update of mariadb from version 10.0.13 to 10.0.17 this bug was introduced to my system. Obviously, the former version was build with the bundled readline whereas the newer one uses libedit making it very hard to work with the command line interface as described in the link given by Christian. Please provide a version built with the bundled (or version 5) readline.
Comment 2 Tomáš Chvátal 2015-07-15 11:45:13 UTC
Okay easy fix for openSUSE is to replace readline-devel for readline5-devel and it should work.

Unfortunately we need to build this for SLE12 where the readline5 was already removed, so we will have to think about re-introducing the package.
Comment 3 Jazz Fan 2015-07-16 08:50:30 UTC
Why don't you use the bundled readline for SLE12? I guess that is what was used for previous versions also in openSUSE since no line

        libreadline.so.5 => /lib64/libreadline.so.5

comes up when I say "ldd /usr/bin/mysql" with version 10.0.13 installed. Of course the system's readline5 could have been statically linked, but I doubt that.

Bundling such libraries is no-go for SUSE perspective. We always should work hard to unbundle everything.

I understand and welcome that. But it seems that that is how it has been since readline6 became standard up to mysql version 10.0.13.
Comment 6 Jazz Fan 2015-08-17 07:38:11 UTC
Push. I really need a solution here. I can't work with this broken client, I am not allowed to compile it myself on my companies computer. So the only thing I can do at the moment is not updating these packages which is not a good idea. So please fix it!
Comment 7 Kristyna Streitova 2015-09-04 12:39:41 UTC
The fix was submitted to Factory and openSUSE 13.1 & 13.2:

- devel/Factory: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/328168
- openSUSE 13.1 & 13.2: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/328908

Closing.
