YaST should not set any domain at all anymore in /etc/hostname. The domain name entry box (eg https://openqa.opensuse.org/tests/67247/modules/yast2_lan/steps/3) should be removed.

yet another year later we aproach a new code stream. what is the status? Do we want to carry this around another ten years?

Fixed in SLE-15-SP1 / yast2-network 4.1.19
