when using opensuse, it will automatically apply available updates, and there is no option to turn this off.

Actually the default updater does not apply any updates automatically, and does not even support that.

So, is this really about KDE, or what desktop environment are you using? (you didn't tell)

It might have been due to that zypper bug 965027
