Description Michael from Offenbach Germany 2016-07-14 23:14:24 UTC
When changing the DOMAIN NAME in yast->System->Network Settings->Hostname/DNS the changes are DROPPED WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE when applying changes with OK.

This seems only to happen when a NIC with a static ipv4 address is present.

If, like in my case on my vserver, a NIC with a static ipv4 address is present, the DOMAIN NAME is cut out of the hostname in the Network Card setup -> Adress. Of course only if the hostname is defined as FQHN.

This might be a workaround, but dropping changes without notice leads to many subsequent problems because of a misconfigured system. Because of this I've set the severity to "Major".
Comment 2 Michael from Offenbach Germany 2016-08-08 14:15:27 UTC
1. Performed a "/usr/sbin/save_y2logs /tmp/y2logs.tgz" on my vserver, as advised by you.

2.
started yast,
changed domain name in yast->System->Network Settings->Hostname/DNS to "<domain_name as before>abc",
applied change,
re-opened yast->System->Network Settings->Hostname/DNS to confirm that concatenated string "abc" has been dropped,
quit yast.

3. Performed a "/usr/sbin/save_y2logs /tmp/y2logs-2.tgz" on my vserver, to get the changes in the log files for you.

Looks to me as there could be a bit of overlap between domain and searchlist, where searchlist wins.

Knut, could you have a look, please?
Comment 6 Knut Alejandro Anderssen González 2016-08-12 15:35:56 UTC
Reproduced i will take a look.

Could you check what is in your /etc/hostname after that change?

Is it whatever.domainasbeforeabc?

YES, it is.

Changed it back manually.

This is automated batch bugzilla cleanup.

The openSUSE 42.1 changed to end-of-life (EOL [1]) status. As such
it is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any
further security or bug fix updates.
As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
openSUSE, or you can still observe it under openSUSE Leap 15.0, please
feel free to reopen this bug against that version (see the "Version"
component in the bug fields), or alternatively open
a new ticket.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed
during the lifetime of the release.
