Description

I went digging a little deeper, and it seems that platform.linux_distribution() is deprecated since python 3.5, and will be removed in python 3.7 (see https://docs.python.org/3.6/library/platform.html#platform.linux_distribution). There's some longer discussion at http://bugs.python.org/issue1322, http://bugs.python.org/issue20454 and other places, and I get the distinct impression nobody is interesting in fixing this for python 2.x, and that anyone who wants this function is being steered towards using https://pypi.python.org/pypi/distro instead. *** Bug 1031378 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 1007140 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** I have now dup'd two bugs to this one, and a third is closely related (1019088). reopening this, because the WONTFIX is intended for Python 3 (function is deprecated now and will be dropped soon enough), but we might want to patch it to work with os-release for Python 2. Other than that, the recommended approach is to use python-distro (which we don't package yet, hah) This bug affects cloud-init in SLES-15 directly, so if we don't get to a point with an improved cloud-init that doesn't use the function to be deprecated we will have to patch this somehow, in python or cloud-init cloud-init uses the default python3.6 of the system. Also effects python-azure-agent build code contains: platform.linux_distribution() this is blocking SLE 15 testing in Azure This is an autogenerated message for OBS integration: This bug (997614) was mentioned in https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/569384 Factory / cloud-init handing over to Guilherme (for cloud-init) and marking FIXED because the request seems to have gone through. The fix I delivered is just a patch to workaround the problem in python3 in cloud-init, it doesn't fix this bug. in that case re-closing as WONTFIX for Python 3, see rationale in comment 2 I understand that this is not very nice work. However, deprecated != should not work a deprecated function should still work as expected until it is removed, which happens in Python 3.7, not in Python 3.6. Additionally, on TW: -> python Python 2.7.14 (default, Oct 12 2017, 15:50:02) [GCC] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import platform >>> platform.dist() ('', '', '') Here the argument of "it's deprecated" is not valid at all as the function is marked deprecated in 3.5+ . I understand that Python 2 is supposed to disappear from TW, but in SLE 15 the Legacy Module with contain Python 2 which will have support for 2 years after release and I expect the behavior of Python 2 in SLE 15 to mimic that of TW, i.e. the function is broken. On TW: -> python3 Python 3.6.4 (default, Jan 03 2018, 13:52:55) [GCC] on linux Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import platform >>> platform.dist() ('', '', '') ".... Features are deprecated rather than immediately removed, to provide backward compatibility, and to give programmers time to bring affected code into compliance with the new standard." from [1]. How we are providing a transition period when we are simply breaking the feature? [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deprecation Agree with Robert here, reopening, something need to be done, even if that means putting a patch in our python and possibly track this issue and direct patches against upstream projects that make use of that for when the function is finally removed. python-distro has now been accepted to Leap 15: https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/577480 Probably this issue is resolved then? (In reply to Sebastian Wagner from comment #14) > python-distro has now been accepted to Leap 15: > https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/577480 > > Probably this issue is resolved then? Well that depends. As pointed out in comment #11 deprecated != broken. The two packages I know off that use platform.linux_distribution have been fixed. cloud-init -> has it's own implementation to determine the Linux distribution, our package is patched and upstream accepted my changes for 18.1 release. python-azure-agent -> uses python-distro now, our package has been patched but not yet submitted to SLE 15, still needs testing. I am also still working on the final format of the patch with upstream. (In reply to Robert Schweikert from comment #15) > (In reply to Sebastian Wagner from comment #14) > > python-distro has now been accepted to Leap 15: > > https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/577480 > > > > Probably this issue is resolved then? > > Well that depends. I am also still > working on the final format of the patch with upstream. That is lovely but we would have to reimplement the function as whole, because it has no idea for the os-release file at all, it simply just parses /etc/*-release and anticipates the old format of the files. It is easy to extend it to load up the os-release, by simply adding 'os' to known distributions, but then what should be the desired content from the os-release... It takes only the first line which used to be like "openSUSE 20160701 (x86_64)" and grabs the distro, version and arch from there... But current os-release does not even account for the platform, thats why it was completely replaced by new module. We have workaround, as such not so big priority... This bug reached Leap 15.0: # cat /etc/os-release NAME="openSUSE Leap" VERSION="15.0" ID="opensuse-leap" ID_LIKE="suse opensuse" VERSION_ID="15.0" PRETTY_NAME="openSUSE Leap 15.0" ANSI_COLOR="0;32" CPE_NAME="cpe:/o:opensuse:leap:15.0" BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.opensuse.org" HOME_URL="https://www.opensuse.org/" # python Python 2.7.14 (default, Oct 12 2017, 15:50:02) [GCC] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import platform >>> platform.linux_distribution() ('', '', '') >>> # python3 Python 3.6.5 (default, Mar 31 2018, 19:45:04) [GCC] on linux Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import platform >>> platform.linux_distribution() ('', '', '') >>> SUSE-RU-2018:1575-1: An update that has 10 recommended fixes can now be installed.
