Description Joe Harmon 2006-09-08 21:00:08 UTC
I am using openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 4 and when I try to install it in vmware it will get to the end of the loading kernel section and lock up hard. I have tried the CD's, creating a DVD, as well as a network install and all of them lock up at the same point where is says loading linux kernel and as soon as the dialog disappears it lock hard. I am unable to get the yast files because of the lockup but I was able to switch over the the debug screen and catch the attached screen shot before it locked up.

Works fine for me with VMware server 1.0.1 running on x86-64.
Comment 4 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-09-12 09:56:58 UTC
Does it install on real hardware? As we don't know what vmware is doing, it's a bit hard to support it...
Comment 5 Forgotten User 7L3tOtZIov 2006-09-12 12:15:12 UTC
It will install on real hardware, yet older hardware and parallels have the same issue. See also 03466 202079 and 204252 and http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/opensuse-factory/2006-09/msg00380.html

Yes it installed fine for me me on another machine but it didn't install for me in vmware or in Xen.

> As we don't know what vmware is doing, it's a bit hard to support it...

I surely hope that we are not saying that we are not going to support vmware. Surely someone there has a VMware workstation where this can be tested.

I hope so as well. Perhaps somebody can look at the similarities between Parallels , VMware and older hardware where the same error apears and then decide which one is a diplicate of what.
Comment 8 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-09-13 08:03:52 UTC
Joe, no, the kernel team does not support vmware, we can not due to their
closed source kernel modules.

Try the next alpha, it should be a bit better for this.
Comment 9 Forgotten User 7L3tOtZIov 2006-09-16 10:46:08 UTC
This is not a VMware issue.

There are several bugs talkinging about something similar. Please somebody with knowledge look at them and decide which one is a copy of the other:
202605, 204252 and 202079.

The issue is that because some are under VMware and Parallels the mauintainers just close those tickets, leaving the issue not closed, but open.

This WILL result in a LOT of problems when people close tickets just because the word Parallels or VMware is used. If maintainers don't look closer, this will become a second zen disaster.
