Bugzilla – Bug 259709
cannot use nxclient
Last modified: 2007-11-28 08:49:53 UTC
I installed FreeNX including all dependencies. I started an NX server. Now when I start nxclient I get an empty window that says xmessage. I expect a useful message.
Please attach screenshot showing this problem.
Please reopen the bug if you can provide the needed information, thanks.
Created attachment 183826 [details] Message screenshot Try this. You're not being very helpful at all though. This happens even if you don't specify a NX server, so all you had to do to reproduce was install NX on your own SUSE computer, and run the command "nxclient".
Created attachment 183827 [details] XMessage, resize so you can see it a bit better The XMessage dialog is really small; heres what it looks like if you expand it a bit. It's still empty, but at elast you can see it's actually from XMessage!
Here's some screenshots, so I've re-opened the bug.
This also affects business, so I voted for this bug as private person and as partner.

I would already appreciate a statement if we are supposed to use nxclient to connect, or maybe use nxdesktop, nxnode, nxnode-login, nxsetup or another.
Could you try the NX + FreeNX packages from our buildservice? http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/NX/openSUSE_10.2/ Use the NX client from Nomachine. NX HOWTO: --------- Server packages are available via our openSUSE build service. http://software.opensuse.org/download/NX Server ------ - install packages NX, FreeNX - setup and start FreeNX (first time) nxsetup --install --setup-nomachine-key --clean - start FreeNX (otherwise) nxserver --start Client ------ - use NX Client from Nomachine: http://www.nomachine.com/download-client-linux.php - NX, FreeNX packages are *not* required - qtnx currently does *not* work - knx is obsolete (and does not work either) Let me know, whether this helps. Thanks.
Stefan: Oops. Sorry for any wasted effort. Unlike the OP, I am not interested in the NX server; my University department runs a server which I find rather useful. So once I found SuSE nxclient didn't work, I installed it from the NX site - as you recommend. Thanks for confirming this. I expect it also answers the OP's question. Thorsten: I use nxclient to connect, and I think thats what my Uni support page said to do. I'm not sure what the node is exactly, but it might be an intermediary - for both the Windows and Linux sessions available at my university, the connection is initially made to the same (linux) server. If you run nxclient on its own, you get a connection wizard, or you can run it with a profile file you downloaded or saved earlier: "nxclient <profile.nxs>". Thanks On the package front, I think we've shown that SuSE nxclient is truly screwed. If there isn't any plan to fix it, I'd vote to just remove the nxclient binary (and adjust the package descriptions accordingly). Pity about the state of it really, when NX have been so open with it. Maybe its not something that can really excite a community, or there aren't enough users.
I don't think this answers my question.
Stefan, this helps, it is the workaround I applied myself half a year ago. But still there are users out there who will run into the same problem - nxclient just showing "XMessage". Please remove nxclient or make it show a message you should use nomachine's nxclient. This will make the NX life of many users much simpler.
What do you mean with "nxclient"? I'm only aware of qtnx as NX client on openSUSE 10.3.
If you look at the header, we are talking about openSUSE 10.2 which was the latest at report time. This contains the package FreeNX which contains /usr/bin/nxclient.
Argh!!! "nxclient" is used by FreeNX to display error messages. Basically it's just a xmessage wrapper, if the Nomachine client is not installed. Luckily it has been renamed to nxdialog with newer FreeNX versions to finally stop the confusion.
Lolz. Thanks for clearing that up Stefan.
Before closing this bug, I would like to see where this change has been done. For openSUSE 10.2, I find ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/noarch/FreeNX*, for openSUSE 10.3, I no longer find it. Can you please clarify.
nxclient --> nxdialog has been changed for openSUSE 11.0 (not available yet) and of course in the buildservice.
