Description Tristan Hoffmann 2007-05-11 16:34:12 UTC
I just installed google earth. I tried both the final 4.0 and the beta 4.1 version and both of the caused a complete crash of X-Window when starting "googleearth". I already noticed this behaviour in a beta version of openSUSE 10.2 but in the final version it just doesn't start.
Comment 1 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-11 16:49:26 UTC
Could you attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks.
Comment 2 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-22 11:08:56 UTC
Still no feedback. Closing as WONTFIX.
Comment 3 Tristan Hoffmann 2007-05-22 14:15:26 UTC
I'm sorry, I didn't get the mail with your first comment.
Here's my xorg.conf.
I updated my old openSUSE 10.2 with fglrx and I am not sure if it still uses it, but 3D-acceleration doesn't work anymore.

By the way: I already noticed this bug in openSUSE 10.2

new xorg.conf

I just let sax2 create a new xorg.conf which only contains fbdev as driver, but I still have the same problem
Comment 6 Tristan Hoffmann 2007-05-22 16:27:45 UTC
you changed the component to "X11 3rd Party Driver" but I don't think it is a driver issue.
I just tested it on a system with an ati card and the "radeon" driver running openSUSE 10.2.
Here's the xorg.conf...

I forgot to write, that it also crashes on that sytstem!
Comment 9 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-22 16:31:23 UTC
But still no logfile available. :-(

xorg-logfile

Sorry, I forgot the logfile. Here it is :)
Comment 11 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-22 20:23:04 UTC
Unfortunately "AMD Radeon X1200 Series" is not supported by the radeon driver, so either the Xserver crash occurs with fglrx driver or fbdev driver but not with radeon driver. Your logfile is for fglrx driver. Anyway you won't have much fun with fbdev driver and googleearth ...
Comment 12 Tristan Hoffmann 2007-05-23 12:40:50 UTC
The logfile using the radeon driver is from another system with (supported) Radeon X200 graphics (onboard).
The crash also occurs on that system (running openSUSE 10.2).
Comment 13 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-23 12:44:21 UTC
There is no logfile using the radeon driver.

xorg-logfile using via driver

I just tested Google Earth on a laptop with a via graphics card using the via driver.
On my first attempt everything worked well, but when I restarted Google Earth x.org also crashed.
Here is the logfile, I will also attach the xorg.conf.

Here is the xorg.conf from the laptop using the "via" driver.
Comment 16 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-23 17:18:24 UTC
Could you also attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old so I can have a look at the crash?

xorg.0.log.old directly after the crash

I started Google Earth and copied the logfile directly after logging back in.

Can't see a crash here. Did the machine completely freeze and therefore the log has been truncated? BTW, you switched again the driver and the machine. The logfile is now again for a fglrx driver configuration. This makes investigation more or less impossible. :-(

xorg.0.log.old from another system

Here is the xorg.0.log.old from another system using an opensource driver for an ATI graphics card.
Google Earth crashed in the same way, but now the logfile contains a backtrace.

Might be a bug in Mesa. What's the output of

  rpm --changelog -q Mesa|head -n 4
Comment 22 Tristan Hoffmann 2007-05-24 15:27:45 UTC
On my openSUSE 10.3 system with fglrx the output is:

* Mo Apr 30 2007 - sndirsch@suse.de
- updated to Mesa 6.5.3
- obsoletes the following patches:
* bug-211314_mesa-destroy_buffers.diff

By the way: I tested some machines in school today, and the only one where Google Earth didn't crash was one with the "ati" driver (Konqueror->sysinfo:/) and enabled 3D-Acceleration, even if the Google Earth window was flickering.
Comment 23 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-24 15:59:12 UTC
Of course I need this information on the machine with the crash (r128) and not on a random machine of your pool.
Comment 24 Tristan Hoffmann 2007-05-24 16:02:55 UTC
sorry, I thought it might also help you...

I only have access to that machine again on Tuesday, but it's openSUSE 10.2 with all the latest updates, if that helps you.

xorg-logfile with crash information using "radeon" driver

I don't want to confuse you with another logfile, but for this one I can provide all the invormation you wanted, so I decided to provide it via bugzilla.

The output of rpm --changelog -q Mesa|head -n 4 is:
* Do Nov 23 2006 - sndirsch@suse.de
- enabled build of i965 DRI driver on x86_64
* Fr Nov 10 2006 - sndirsch@suse.de

I hope it helps you...
Comment 26 Stefan Dirsch 2007-05-24 20:03:58 UTC
But this Mesa is from a openSUSE 10.2 system whereas the bugreport is against openSUSE 10.3 Alpha3! Up to now I've only seen X.Org logfiles with crashes from openSUSE 10.2. These bugs are known and have been fixed for X.Org/Mesa on
openSUSE 10.3. Unfortunately some of these fixes are nearly impossible to backport to X.Org/Mesa of openSUSE 10.2. Others have been fixed in an update
of xorg-x11-server.

Crash also occurs with openSUSE 10.3 Alpha5 and vesa driver
