Description Mark Van De Vyver 2007-06-04 23:00:13 UTC
Hi,
I create a new user and launch the first session for this user using knx and freenx on the localhost.

KDE does not launch cleanly. See the session file attached.

There are a multitude of errors which I'm trying to track down and eliminate.
Will post updates.

Comment 2 Mark Van De Vyver 2007-06-05 09:05:28 UTC
Several mailing list reports suggested KDE startup errors can be associated with updating KDE packages without shutting down X windows infrastructure.
So I did the following:
1) Logout of kde
2) ctl+alt+f1
3) login as root
4) init 2
5) YaST2
6) Reload installed kde packages:

This seems to have the effect of eliminating the following errors (updated session log attached):

See bug #280901 for a possible explanation of the 'Invalid Service' warning:

kio (KService*): WARNING: The desktop entry file
.hidden/dirfilterplugin.desktop has Type=Service but is located under "apps"
instead of "services"

The xlib MNG, ALSA, errors _may_ be caused by or related to special characters
being unexpectedly processed due to poorly formatted *.desktop files. This is
described in bug #280954...? Or they may not?
Comment 6 Dirk Mueller 2007-06-05 15:33:14 UTC
they have nothing to do with the desktop files, really.
Comment 7 Mark Van De Vyver 2007-06-06 03:22:26 UTC
OK, I'm willing to believe this..... any idea what might be causing them? If not, any hint/suggestion about how to find out - the error messages seems quite cryptic to me. I'm a new Linux user so nothing is too simple :)
Thanks for looking at this Dirk.

this sounds a bit like a hal/policykit issue. danny, could you please look at it?
Comment 9 Danny Al-Gaaf 2007-09-13 14:06:49 UTC
If you use freenx you get a remote session and IIRC remote sessions are not allowed to mount or e.g. change the brightness. This is the same as for vnc and other remote session. We have this for security reasons.
Comment 11 Dirk Mueller 2007-09-20 16:20:41 UTC
the other debug issues are just minor and handled elsewhere already, so that leaves this bug as wontfix.
