Description Aaron Williams 2007-08-16 23:07:20 UTC
We have a new HP workstation DC7700p which refuses to boot the OpenSUSE 10.3 beta 1 DVD, even in safe mode. The 10.2 DVD would only work with ACPI off.

When it tries to boot from GRUB I only get a black screen and it never proceeds any further.

Note that ACPI hangs with 10.2 on this machine and X11 will only support framebuffer mode with the integrated Intel graphics (we added an nVidia card which fixed that).

Could you please add more details on this bug report, as described in http://bugs.opensuse.org/ and http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/Kernel
Comment 2 Aaron Williams 2007-08-22 04:46:43 UTC
Immediately after GRUB I get a blank screen and the system hangs indefinitely. I am installing the 64-bit version of 10.3 beta 1 from DVD. All options from the boot menu, including safe and acpi=off, hang like this. No oops or other message is visible, only a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner.

I don't know what other info I can provide, other than a lot of people seem to be reporting problems with this computer model and Linux.

Keyboard activity has no effect (numlock or capslock) and the only option is to cycle the power.

With the 10.2 kernel it will only boot with acpi=off.

Comment 3 Christoph Thiel 2007-08-22 06:22:36 UTC
At least providing more detailed hardware, bios, etc information from the system booted into 10.2 could make some sense.

attached hwinfo output from opensuse 10.2

I have exactly the same error.

I am using a hp compaq dc7700 small form factor pc
Firmware release 1.10 (latest for home use, 2.10 is the latest version for use with hp vpro products)

sles 10 sp1 installs flawless with all the defaults set
opensuse 10.2 installs ok with acpi=off

I have attached the hwinfo output for details about the hardware
Comment 5 Forgotten User -UpQBLGEK9 2007-08-24 09:23:07 UTC
hwinfo output is from opensuse 10.2
Comment 6 Forgotten User -UpQBLGEK9 2007-08-24 09:34:43 UTC
I have this problem in opensuse 10.3 beta 1 and in opensuse 10.3 beta 2

hello,

It seems that I have been a bit to quick with the check

The opensuse 10.3 beta 3 kde cd did NOT continue after grub on my dc7700

sorry about the fuss
Comment 9 Juha Vuori 2007-09-24 17:09:21 UTC
This appears as a real bug in my pc, too. I'm panic'ing with openSUSE-10.3-RC1-DVD-x86_64.iso installation kernel in my HP Compaq dc5700 Microtower with all kinds of installation modes.

Here are the last lines of installation kernel log captured from the screen:

"""
...
Call Trace:
<IRQ> [(...)] handle_level_irq +0x3c /0x3f
...
Code: Bad RIP value.
RIP [<00...00>] _stext +0x7f...
  RSP <...>
CR2: 00...00
Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
"""

I will try to get netconsole to work tonight to be able to deliver a decent log for the case. (I don't know if the log is available in the network card early enough, and I don't have serial cables, and I've never done this kind of debugging before, but I'll try.)

Btw, I have not been able to use ACPI in the hardware even with openSUSE 10.2. With acpi=off I've been able to manage (getting power off using the power button, etc...). Maybe that suggests to a wider problem with x68 branch of kernel and installation in the motherboard in question, I don't know.

Some more info for my case and iron:

I couldn't get any output via netconsole during x86_64 dvd installation. I don't know if this doesn't work as documented, if it is not supported by the installation kernel, or if I did something wrong.

I tried to install x86_64 port with KDE cd, image file openSUSE-10.3-RC1-KDE-x86_64.iso.
--> panics exactly alike as with the DVD image.

I tried to install i386 port with dvd image openSUSE-10.3-RC1-DVD-i386.iso.
--> works ok. At least Yast starts ok (I didn't proceed with the actual installation).

Let me know if I could do something more with this.

installation kernel log in HP dc5700M

For my dc5700m:
I bought a null modem cable.
I don't know how I have been able to manage without it so far. :)
I attach boot console log for my machine also, to be able to verify that the problem is the same as with dc7700. This is from a "safe mode" installation. The case seems to be identical with dc5700 and dc7700.

I guess enough information is provided, so I remove NEEDINFO.

Same problem here. This bugs seems very similar to what is described here:

I'm not so sure. Several users have provided stack traces that indicate a seg fault in handle_level_irq with identical traces. This looks to be a duplicate of 246646.
