When i press 'Alt + .' in xterm, i don't get the last argument of the last command (the behaviour i see using konsole). Instead i see something like this:

sschober@e86:~> echo hallo
hallo
sschober@e86:~> �

the '�' character is displayed as an inverted question mark. 

The problem is independant of the user i'm logged in as.
