Bugzilla – Bug 326824
Unusable gnome yast2 package selector invoked by Details in opensuse updater
Last modified: 2007-09-21 12:53:59 UTC
Created attachment 173683 [details] screenshot of package selector (really hard to find which package will be updated) I see this as a usability problem. When click on Details for the updates in the opensuse updater gnome applet, it opens a Package selector. But this aplication is showing over 1000 packages which I have installed so I can't get the information about updates. The usability of Package selector it self could be another story.
This doesn't do a decent job at all of communicating which packages need updating.
I would propose to upgrade this bug to Blocker: It gives no visible information, what is going to be updated, except number of packages. It also has major usability issues: - It gives no feedback in case of typing mistake in root's password (one must guess what happened). - Reading "details" needs root privileges (but number of packages does not need root privileges), "install" needs root privileges as well.
There is no indicator if it is something doing or not. If I enter a string to search, 10 seconds no change and I'm guessing, it is doing something or it is broken?
The Details button calls online_update since last Wednesday which should give you at least the list of patches, but unfortunately no package updates. This should fix the initial report. To comment #1, #2: > "It gives no visible information, what is going to be updated, except number of packages." This was one of the design goals of the simple view, as most users don't really care about what gets updated. The huge lists that appear in most Linux distribution actually scare a lot of users. To comment #2: > It gives no feedback in case of typing mistake in root's password (one must guess what happened) This is then a gnomesu problem, IMHO. To comment #2: > Reading "details" needs root privileges (but number of packages does not need root privileges), "install" needs root privileges as well. Details and Install invoke processes that require authentication (you are installing software) thus asking for root privileges is needed. To comment #3: This is a problem of the yast2-gtk package selector. Will therefore mark this as a duplicate of #298735 however this is for post 10.3 I agree, calling an external program to control each and every update item is not optimal. This will be better integrated with the applet in the future but there was no time to get this integrated _right_ within the 10.3 time frame. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 298735 ***
(In reply to comment #4 from Jörg Kreß) > The Details button calls online_update since last Wednesday which should give > you at least the list of patches, but unfortunately no package updates. This > should fix the initial report. So why it is not in 10.3 RC1? Last Wednesday is before check in deadline for RC1.
(In reply to comment #5 from Ladislav Michnovič) > So why it is not in 10.3 RC1? Last Wednesday is before check in deadline for > RC1. > I seem to count differently. Last Wednesday was 2 days ago (at least for me). Which was two days after deadline. Sorry if I confused the wording.
Aha, I see. Today it's Friday, isn't it? The time is running so quickly.
