Description Lee Matheson 2007-10-21 21:18:48 UTC
A new iso file (or other well documented) work around is needed for this bug in the retail 10.3 DVD's "Repair Installed System" function.

MBR on openSUSE-10.3 (on 32-bit Fujitsu Siemens 7400M laptop) was over written by a winXP install in a separate partition. Efforts to recover MBR with openSUSE-10.3 retail installation DVD failed, in part due to bug in "Repair Installed System" on DVD.

Details:

To attempt MBR recovery ran Installation on DVD, and at menu item for "new installation", "update" or "other", selected "other" and "repair installed system". PC just rebooted. Selecting "boot installed system" resulted in error during boot of "Linuxrc v3.0.20 (kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default) An error occured during the installation" and dropping back to the main text abort menu.

Clearly repairing an installed system function is NOT intuitively obvious, and is out of sync with anything in the setup or reference manuals.

The retail installation DVD simply is not user functional as a rescue CD/DVD.

Hence recommend either a rescue ISO CD be prepared for openSUSE, or other well documented work around is implemented to work around this bug in the retail 10.3 DVD's "Repair Installed System" function.
