Description Jiri Dluhos 2007-11-09 15:07:02 UTC
I have stumbled over two different x86-64 machines that both exhibit the same error: HAL daemon does not start at boot. There are no special error messages, and when hald is started manually, it starts working normally. This is, however, a serious problem for a common user as e.g. KDE relies on HAL completely, and is not able to use CD/DVD-ROM nor USB storage without it.

Both machines are relatively new; one of them is a Core2Duo Intel, the other is a slightly older Athlon 64 X2. I'm not sure what hardware may affect this.
