on my Pentium 4 (HT, no EMT64), Ati 
startx hangs. ps -ef gave me the hang on glxinfo called from
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup" line 236

killall glxinfo fixed this.

AS I do not use compiz, there may be no need to call glxinfo here.

There are more bugs, using the fglrx driver here.
fix from #341805 did help to get the driver up.
For your information:
mouse pointer is using another Y-scale then xorg is aware of.
