Description Casual J. Programmer 2007-12-27 10:23:57 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #350558 +++

After experiencing Bug #350558 I stumbled on the System/Environment/Language section in the /etc/sysconfig Editor.

While this tool provides measures to set up a mix of locales for various items it is rather confusing and probably not the tool of choice for the average user ( especially if coming from the MS Windows Environment ).

I suggest adding a feature to YaST that lets users change all aspects of a chosen locale to their needs without digging into the inner workings of a Linux system.

Try Windows XP Control Center Languages and Regions for a good working example ;-)

Well, the YaST language module offers a better interface but still not what
you want.

Not sure if this should better be (or even is) done by KDE/Gnome. Coolo?

The YaST language module is nice to look at, but has _very_ limited capabilities. No way to adapt any locale to the users needs.

I'm not with you, the locale setup in the details you describe are really desktop tasks and should stay there and not be done by an administrator for all users. And this also true for XP btw.

As I mentioned in comment #1 I forwarded this suggestion as Bug #350558 was closed as wontfix as well.

The people at OpenOffice ( see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=332190 ) seem to reject the thought that there should be a means of tweaking the locale in their product as well.

While I now have found a way to get what I want, I must insist that this is _absolutely_not_ user friendly.

So whether you add the feature to YaST or OpenOffice takes care of it is really irrelevant, but somebody should really help the average user out of this catch22.

Not sure how you communicate with upstream and/or other distros. But this issue should surely be addressed in some common discussion.

if there is no such way to customize this in GNOME, then I would put this as GNOME enhancement
