Description Markus Elfring 2008-01-22 22:10:52 UTC
There are a couple of open issues in the application of switching between different desktop sessions. The design details that will need some improvements are already described in documents like the following.

- "Building a Modern Multi-User Desktop" by William Jon McCann
  http://people.freedesktop.org/~mccann/talks/guadec-multiuser.pdf (581 KB)

I would like to point out a few things where I am affected.
1. An identification can be chosen by the tool "fast-user-switch-applet 2.20.0" (http://ignore-your.tv/fusa/) in GNOME. But it is not transferred and reused in the GDM login manager. The user name must be entered again.

2. It seems that I can not open another session for the same user.

3. I am missing the menu entry/button "Switch User" in KDE 3.5.7 on my system. This should be supported by the KDM login manager.

4. I am curious when this feature will work with KDE 4 (Bug #355085).

Mhm. Sounds like these are issues for the guys maintaining the correspondig packages.
As I am lacking the ability to program either KDE or GNOME stuff I don't see how I can be of any assistance to you.

Sorry,

Martin

Would you like to support improvements for the software "ConsoleKit" and related issues?

1.,2. How much pressure is there to reduce limitations in session management?

By the way:
3. The missed functionality reappeared with KDE 3.5.8 on my system.

1. and 2. seem indepedent issues, so please file independent reports and always list exactly the software you're refering to. Because you're gently mixing gdm/kdm and kde/gnome in this report and in this very case it's pretty important to know.
