Bugzilla – Bug 357161
hald-addon-hid-ups uses lots of memory
Last modified: 2008-05-14 10:15:12 UTC
I have a server that runs 24/24 and is rebooted only on long power breaks or when certain updates are installed. I noticed that the hald-addon-hid-ups process uses lot of memory over time. Here is the actual output from top: 2495 root 15 0 1256m 69m 264 S 0.0 6.9 3:31.22 hald-addon-hid-ups: listening on /dev/hiddev0 1256m VIRT, 69m RES, 6.9% in total. uptime: 10:10am up 18 days 22:31, 11 users, load average: 0.58, 0.62, 1.10 bu t The UPS connected to it is an APC BackUPS CS 500 via USB cable, but there is no software installed at this moment to manage the UPS. Aftre restarting hald with rchal restart: 19145 root 15 0 21436 1064 784 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.00 hald-addon-hid-ups: listening on /dev/hiddev0
I should add that on another PC (x86_64, openSUSE 10.3), but with a parallel port UPS with proprietary monitoring daemon I did not experience any problem with hald (but the problematic process seems to be not running at all there).
I could not find a place where the addon could leak memory. Could you maybe try to reproduce it on a 11.0 Beta2? Could you please, if reproduceable, attach a complete 'ps aux' output.
Output from top here: 2660 root 15 0 1275m 1.0g 320 S 0 50.5 2:24.17 hald-addon-hid-ups Unfortunately the OOM killer decided to kill mysqld and httpd2-prefork instead, so not happy :(. I killed it, and restarted the nut ups stuff and the nut stuff seems to work fine without the hald thingy running. Hope to not reproduce it - I have renamed hald-addon-hid-ups ;).
(In reply to comment #3 from Lincoln Yeoh) > Hope to not reproduce it - I have renamed hald-addon-hid-ups ;). That helps really fixing the problem! I need to know: - are there other processes which eat memory (VIRT or RES) - could one of you test if the problem is present with latest openSUSE 11.0 beta version? This would help to isolate the problem.
Any news?
I cannot upgrade to 11.0 until a stable version comes out, as it is a server in production. But it is reproducable, I just logged in to the server and it uses 690M VIRT and 122M RES.... Don't add such long outputs directly to the bugs the next time. This is why we have attachments. Could you please try the HAL package from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/dkukawka/openSUSE_10.3/ Please check if this package helps.
ping!
Please give me a few more days. I installed the new packages, just that...the server was replaced shortly after it. The new server is also AMD x64, runs openSUSE 10.3, just that I didn't had time to properly configure the UPS management and install the updated packages to test it.
Bad news: I simply couldn't configure it on the new PC. And the problem is somewhere around the hid module. The cable is connected, the UPS is recognized, but the hid driver is not loaded for it: cat /proc/bus/usb/devices T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 9 Spd=1.5 MxCh= 0 D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1 P: Vendor=051d ProdID=0002 Rev= 0.06 S: Manufacturer=American Power Conversion S: Product=Back-UPS CS 500 FW:808.q5.I USB FW:q5 C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr= 0mA I:* If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=03(HID ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=(none) E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) And it worked with the old PC, otherwise I would not have to write this BR.
Then please open a new bug for you problem with the driver.
I close the bug for now. Please reopen it if you have the machine running again. Please try also to update the nut/nut-hal package (Maybe you need to remove the hald-addon-hid-ups binary to get the nut-hal addon for HAL running which should do the same as hald-addon-hid-ups).
