Bugzilla – Bug 381938
Descriptions for KDE3 and KDE4 desktops almost identical
Last modified: 2008-04-23 07:38:20 UTC
In the desktop selection during installation, we currently have two different versions of KDE to choose from: KDE3 and KDE4. The descriptions for both options are identical except for the version number (KDE3 vs. KDE3). This is not helpful for users to make a decision which one might be more appropriate for them. I suggest we add some explanation like "KDE4 is brand new and has much more visual effects, but not all KDE applications are ported to KDE4 yet. KDE3 is a mature and proven desktop, but it lacks the transparency effects etc. of KDE4". I am aware that we are walking on thin ice here with the always ongoing competition between GNOME and KDE, so we have to choose the wording carefully. But if the description does not assist the user in making his choice, we might as well omit it completely.

Descriptions are taken from respective patterns.
Descriptions coming from patterns is no "excuse" - well maybe from yast-developer point of view - but the issue remains, the patterns should have helpful descriptions too. I agree the descriptions need something to set them apart, even if it breaks string freeze. Stefan's suggestion gives the impression that KDE4.0 only adds eyecandy though, which is false. Maybe something like: "KDE 4.0 has many exciting new features but still lacks the maturity of KDE3.5" "KDE 3.5 is a mature and proven desktop"
