openSUSE 11.0, clean installation with autoconfig, environment is GNOME

on startup, i see:

Unknown username "avahi" in message bus configuration file
Unknown group "avahi" in message bus configuration file
Unknown username "gdm" in message bus configuration file

both avahi and gdm refuse to start without their users present, which results in various problems (no GUI, for instance)

my /etc/passwd lists the following users:
