Description Imanel van Hellar 2008-05-10 01:14:00 UTC
When looking at "Hardware" tab in YaST2 there are options like "keyboard", "mouse", and "graphic card and monitor" all from SaX - but no "tablet" option witch is hidden under "graphic card and monitor" position. It is very confusing for newbie users to find how to setup tablet, with is very simple in openSUSE.
Please just add "tablet" position in "hardware" submenu of YaST2.
Comment 1 Jiří Suchomel 2008-05-12 06:44:22 UTC
I don't think this is possible, when we want to reduce number of items in YaST menu.
Comment 2 Stefan Dirsch 2008-08-14 02:20:45 UTC
Maybe we should rename "Graphics card & monitor" to "Graphics Card, Monitor & Tablet/Touchscreen" instead?
Comment 3 Imanel van Hellar 2008-08-14 08:08:51 UTC
Or simply "graphics input/output" ? Maybe not super-intuitive, but better than "graphic card & monitor" with no suggestion about other devices...
Comment 4 Stefan Dirsch 2008-08-14 09:09:11 UTC
Yes, "Graphics input/output" sounds *very* reasonable to me from a technical
point of view. Not sure how this is handled on different operating systems
like Windows/Mac or other Linux distributions.
Comment 6 Siegfried Olschner 2008-08-15 11:52:51 UTC
Some comments:

We want to reduce the number of visible icons in the YaST Control Center, this is correct. And the Tablet icon is not visible and this is bad for new users.

The current status is based on the fact that only a few users do work with a tablet and SUSE Linux. And atm they own the status "Experts". So we think they will know what to do.

OS/X - Windows:
---------------
The situation with OS/X and Windows is different. If you install a new tablet on on Windows or OS/X you will install the drivers via CD or internet search. After this you will have a new icon in the control center. Normally you will get the request to insert the Driver CD by the system.

OS/X: it's stored in the section "Other" (German: Sonstiges)
      Wacom Tablet

Windows: the modules have no sorting in the old view mode
don't know where it is placed in the newer XP sorting mode or in Vista

Other Linux systems: don't know

Good solution for us would be:
------------------------------
User connected the tablet -> configuration module will pop up.
After configuration the YaST/Sax Module "Tablet" is available via icon in the "Hardware" section.

Question: Can we do this?

Otherwise we are forced to place the icon permanently in the Hardware section. This icon will open the sax2 configuration module "Tablet"

BTW: Reducing the number of modules in YCC:
--------------------------------------------
If we want to reduce the number of modules dispalyed in the YCC we have to cluster them:
e.g.
- Backup and Restore = one module with one start dialog
- AppArmor = one module in the section "Security" with one start dialog providing the overview
- Software and Update Management = entry via one icon providing the overview

What's about the idea to summarize the "Human Input Devices" (thanks rlihm) via one icon.
-> Tablet, mouse, joystick, keyboard.

I also suggest to keep the caption "Graphics Card & Monitor"
In my ear "Graphics input/output" is difficult to understand for "normal" users.
- OS/X =
     Section: Hardware -> Item: Monitors
- Widows XP =
Section: Appearance & Themes -> Item: Display
pop up of window: Display Properties -> Tab: "Settings"

Thanks a lot for your input, Sigi.

I'm afraid we can't at the moment.

1. Probably our desktops KDE3/KDE4/Gnome/Xfce can't detect a Tablet on-the-fly.
2. I don't think the appearance of YaST module icons can depend on the
   detected hardware.

> Otherwise we are forced to place the icon permanently in the Hardware

... which would mean one more permanent YaST2 icon.

Might be possible. Marcus?

I fully agree here.

I like "Display", which would cover 'Graphics Card', 'Monitor' and somewhat 'Touchscreen'. What about renaming "Graphics Card & Monitor" to "Display & Human Input Devices", which would cover everything SaX2
provides incuding Tablet configuration? I would keep the existing YaST2
modules for mouse and keyboard.

Comment 8 Imanel van Hellar 2008-08-15 16:56:53 UTC
Sounds good.
About other systems - in Ubuntu wacom tablets are preconfigured, so no additional things was necessary - one quirk is default settiong of pen(no pressure-sensitive and distance between pen and tablet is to small to move around - my friend uses only tablet without mouse...)
In elivecd when I connect my Wacom Intuos 3 some dialog appears informing me that my tablet was configured correctly - dunno how... but works well... (version 1.8.2)

About users with tablets - I know a lot of linux users having tablet and some them only know how to run gimp/krita, firefox/opera and exaile/amarok (three basic functions ;) but when I show them xorg.conf they look at me in strange way...
Comment 9 Stefan Dirsch 2008-08-27 02:33:23 UTC
Thinking about it again, IMO it would be the best to rename the YaST module "Graphics Card & Monitor" to "Display & Human Input Devices" and remove YaST2 modules for mouse and keyboard, since "Human Input Devices" already covers mouse/keyboard as input devices.

Sigi?
Comment 15 Siegfried Olschner 2008-09-22 13:44:42 UTC
This would reflect the truth but will mix "input" and "output" devices and will produce some confusion for new users.

I wonder if following solution would be better:

Hardware

    [Super- [Super-
     Icon] Icon]

    Monitor Input-Devices

       | |
will show will show Some redundancy
     Monitor Mouse BTW: Vista shows
+ Touchscreen + Keyboard some redundancy too in
                   + Tablet the configuration module
+ Touchscreen lists for different sections
                                         (Display/Monitor is sorted to
                                         Appearance/Adjustment and to Hardware)

And the search for a module will give the result "input-devices" with search phrase "keyboard, tablet, mouse, touchscreen"

BTW: one big Problem for me is, that the explanatory text is not shown in the Gnome YaST Control Center, and I think the search for e.g. "keyboard" will not find the item then. Another bug.

I'm afraid it's not possible to implement this. Either show one module or all.
Marcus?
Comment 17 Siegfried Olschner 2008-09-22 13:57:23 UTC
I think Apple would present following.

 Hardware

    Displays Keyboard &
                     Mouse

 Other

    Tablet

The user is able to find "Tablet" via the search
Comment 18 Stefan Dirsch 2008-09-22 14:07:45 UTC
Well, I asked Marcus for feedback.
Comment 19 Marcus Schaefer 2008-09-22 14:27:24 UTC
this is not possible at the moment because the dialog based startup
hides the module list at the left completely and simply starts the
requested dialog as only dialog

It's possible to change that but I don't have time for it.
A solution would be:

* change the api code to show the module list at the left side
* change the option --dialog to allow multiple values like
Mouse,Tablet and use the first dialog as the one which is shown
* add a function which walks through the module list and hides
  the ones not requested
Comment 20 Stefan Dirsch 2008-09-22 16:15:05 UTC
I think my proposal (comment #9) would be still possible for Beta2 - given that it's not too late for translations yet, whereas Sigi's proposal (comment #16) is no option for Beta2. Setting priority accordingly.
Comment 21 Karl Eichwalder 2008-09-23 09:05:23 UTC
I'd rather avoid the technical expression "input devices". Just list some of those as said above ("Display, Keyboard, Mouse, etc."). Also please let's avoid the ampersand ("&") and the term "Graphics Card".

If you can submit a changed package later this week, it is probably fine translation-wise.
Comment 22 Karl Eichwalder 2008-09-23 09:07:27 UTC

> those as said above ("Display, Keyboard, Mouse, etc.").

Or better "Display, Keyboard, Mouse, and Others", or something along these lines.
Comment 23 Stefan Dirsch 2008-09-23 09:13:19 UTC
> Just list some of those as said above ("Display, Keyboard, Mouse, etc.").
... which won't address the initial issue, that tablet is not mentioned. Probably it's the best not to change anything, since we can't agree on anything anyway. I'm afraid we'll end up with a solution, which is worse than before and changes the current behaviour.
Comment 24 Siegfried Olschner 2008-09-23 09:31:42 UTC
Perhaps we can place a "Tablet" icon in the section Miscellaneous. So normal users are able to find it via search and it will not enhance the number of icons in the often used section hardware.

@Karl, what do you think? I wonder if "Other" is a better description for "Miscellaneous".
Comment 25 Karl Eichwalder 2008-09-23 10:41:18 UTC
"Miscellaneous" is rather sophiticated, IMO. I think it has a strong UN*X or university background.

Stefan Dirsch:
>> Just list some of those as said above ("Display, Keyboard, Mouse, etc.").
>... which won't address the initial issue, that tablet is not mentioned.

Yeah, but nevertheless it addresses the issue indirectly. The user sees there is something more hidden, and will probably try it if there is nothing better that might him help to get the tablet working.

If it's not too long, I'd probably vote to write "Display, Keyboard, Mouse, and Other Input Devices".
Comment 26 Stefan Dirsch 2009-04-11 01:14:39 UTC
Just for the record. The keyboard and mouse modules will be removed for openSUSE 11.2. Having YaST icons for tablet/touchscreen might still make sense, as long
as we still have them ...
Comment 31 Stefan Dirsch 2009-08-05 14:45:27 UTC
We just removed mouse and keyboard modules from YaST. We won't introduce a tablet/touchscreen module instead. Apparently HAL support has been added to wacom driver, so there is probably no huge need for configuration via SaX2 any longer.
WONTFIX.
