Description Shyukri Shyukriev 2008-05-16 12:49:01 UTC
I used SCSI disk for the installation and at System analysis section no hard drive was found.
I haven't any related problems with Beta2 on the same configuration.
With IDE disk i have no problems.
I'm using VMware version 1.0.3
Comment 1 Hannes Reinecke 2008-05-16 13:19:52 UTC
Please update your VMWare installation. 1.0.3 has a bug which prevents 11.0 to install, and the respective fix was vetoed upstream as this clearly is a defect in the VMWare SCSI emulation.

Yes, sorry, we have dropped support for very old versions of vmware like this as no other Linux distro supports them, and neither does vmware. Also, the upstream Linux kernel did not accept this change, and we do not want to diverge from what they are doing there.

I am running vmware 1.0.4, and also see this bug. Is 1.0.4 considered a '_very_ old version of vmware'?

Here I not only see NO harddisks to install on, but the installer actually freezes, when trying to load the BusLogic driver. Installing with brokenmodules=BusLogic allows installer to continue, but then no harddisks are found. (obviously...)

I you choose not to fix this error, maybe can we try to detect this older and incompatible vmware version and display a 'not compatible' error message or so? Just having the installer freeze when loading the BusLogic driver is really not elegant.

vmware does not support this version anymore, and from what I can tell on their web site, has not done so for a long time (many years).

As vmware is closed source, we have no way to detect if we are running on it at all, sorry.

ok, I understand the closed source thing, no problem.

I just want to react to this statement: "vmware does not support this version anymore, and from what I can tell on their web site, has not done so for a long time (many years)."

As you can see on this page: http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

The version in question (1.0.4) was released a bit more than half a year ago, in fact: september 2007, which in my opinion is NOT 'many years ago'.

(and currently the latest version is 1.0.5, so 1.0.4 is not old at all)

I just think there may be people who want to give opensuse a try, and they are in for a bummer, unless they use the _very latest_ vmware version.

Anyway, if nothing can be done about it, then nothing can be done about it. :-)

>I am running vmware 1.0.4, and also see this bug.
really?
could you perhaps double check if your server is using 1.0.4 ?
iirc, that should have already been fixed in 1.0.4 - so maybe you are using older server version with 1.0.4 console ?

i can confirm for sure, that it is fixed in 1.0.5 - i can both install opensuse 11 beta 3 with lsi logic and buslogic virtual controller without problems. (1.0.5 on windows)

so, upgrading shouldn`t hurt.

>Is 1.0.4 considered a '_very_ old version of vmware'?

no, indeed it`s not very old - but why should novell or linux community workaround vmware bugs which are already fixed by vmware ?
