Description Martin Vuk 2008-05-30 09:03:33 UTC
Networkmanager application for KDE does not detect any wireles networks and consequently does not connect to any.
I can detect the networks with iwlist and can connect to them with traditional method (ifup/ifdown).
After restarting the system the knetworkmanager didn't even start. And after starting manually only one icon apears (globe) in the dock. At the begining there were also icons for wired and wireless network.

Workaround is to use the traditional method instead of networkmanager.

The system is Dell D630 laptop with intel 3945ABG wifi chip (0c:00.0 pci Id). The desktop is KDE 3.5

Are you using NetworkManager or traditional method (aka NetControl) for your networking (set in YaST)?

NetworkManager of course! I mentioned traditional method only as a workaround, since NEtworkManager isn't working properly.

Martin, if you create a new connection you should see all available networks in KNM. Unknown networks are not shown in the context menu.
Comment 4 Clark Tompsett 2008-06-06 14:51:41 UTC
The current version of KNM will not see any wireless networks unless the wireless card is on at boot time. If you turn the card on after boot, KNM does not see any wireless networks when you go to add a new connection. iwlist shows the networks in the area, but KNM is blank. It appears that KNM is not rescanning the wireless connection for an updated list of AP(s).
Comment 5 Clark Tompsett 2008-06-06 14:54:57 UTC
Also, if you kill KNM and restart it, then the wireless networks will show. If you turn wireless off, the last know list of AP(s) are shown, even though you cannot connect to them. KNM is not doing a refresh of the wireless list.
Comment 6 Will Stephenson 2008-06-06 15:08:10 UTC
#4,#5: using the iwl3945 driver? Try "ifconfig <interface> up" to get it to show some networks.
Comment 7 Martin Vuk 2008-06-06 15:14:31 UTC
Helmut, it is true. If I create new connection, the unknown networks are
listed. Maybe this should be mentioned in the release notes.
Comment 8 Clark Tompsett 2008-06-06 15:46:22 UTC
I have a bcm4311 so the driver I use is the b43 driver. The ability to locate AP(s) in KNM has changed over the last several updates to KNM.
Comment 9 Helmut Schaa 2008-06-06 15:54:07 UTC
The last check in introduced a new bug which is fixed in SVN already.
