Description Grzegorz Kossakowski 2008-12-02 13:46:52 UTC
Hello,

I've upgraded my laptop from 11.0 to 11.1 RC1 using 32bit DVD. The biggest issue I've noticed is that login manager freezes if I choose to log into KDE4. It freezes as soon as I press enter key (after entering my password of course).

There is no such a problem with KDE3.

FYI: I use nvidia graphic card if it helps.

Personally, I rate this bug as between Major and Critical provided it's not only affecting me.

Does your .xsession-errors file tell you anything?

Did you have just packages from the 11.0 DVD + You updates, or did you use some 3rd party packages as well?

I've deleted previous .xsession-errors, rebooted my machine and made it to freeze. The .xsession-errors file is empty.

There were a few of packages installed from packman (but not related to KDE4 or KDE in general) and I've been using Factory version of KDE4 before I decided to upgrade.

Same situation here. I use kdm4 and i can't login neither to kde3 nor to kde4 from it. Moreover, <ctrl>+<alt>+<bksp> twice kills kdm4, but it fails to restart. Doing 'rcxdm restart' from shell as root does not help - it just says 'stopping kdm...' 'starting kdm...' and does not switch to vt7. Manually killing kdm process and running 'kdm' as root restarts x11 on vt7 and allows to log in.

I can't log in to both kde3 and kde4 as well using my standard user. If I create a new user I can login to kde3 only.

Guys, this looks like a serious problem. Is there anyone taking care of such issues before 11.1 hits mirrors?

I cannot reproduce. What does 'freeze' mean exactly? Can you kill X with double Ctrl+Alt+Backspace? Can you switch to text mode using Ctrl+Alt+F1? Can you connect remotely to the computer?
Comment 6 Alexander Lavrinenko 2008-12-10 12:05:19 UTC
'Freeze' means after you input password and hit <enter> KDM freezes. This happens if pam_fp.so module is used in /etc/pam.d/common-auth (fingerprint support). Without this module everything is OK. Symptoms and consequences of freeze i've described in comment #3 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450893#c3
Comment 7 Grzegorz Kossakowski 2008-12-10 21:19:38 UTC
I confirm that Alexander is right. After commenting out pam_fp module in common_auth I was able to log into KDE3 again.

There is another bug discovered: you can't disable fingerprint plug-in in Yast2 from command line.

Anyway, I still cannot log into KDE4 but this time it simply returns to KDM after a while. I'll attach Xorg.log and xsession-errors so others can have a look.
