Unfortunately I don't have much details, and it's on an older system (beta 4,
glibc-2.9-2.3), but today (after weekend) no nscd process existed anymore.

No log messages in /var/log/messages, except:
Jan 19 13:51:22 knuth nscd: 27261 invalid persistent database file "/var/run/nscd/passwd": verification failed

But that's when I started it again.  I don't know since when it wasn't running
anymore.  As this bugreport is nearly useless in this state, feel free
to close it right away.  I just wanted it to not go by unnoticed :)

nscd is known to have instabilities. probably similar to https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=426679

We have a catch-all bug for current nscd instabilities at bug 387202. Currently, nscd should be much more stable, I'm going to submit an update for 11.1 very soon.
