Description Forgotten User puKLX2-vO_ 2010-01-05 21:59:07 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091222 SUSE/3.5.7-2.4 Firefox/3.5.7

The latest kernel update to kernel-desktop-2.6.31.8-0.1.1.i586 breaks WLAN connections at least using the RT2860 on an EeePC using the KDE4 network manager client. The network manager pops up the authentication window every 10-20 seconds, but cannot establish the connection.

Going back to kernel-desktop-2.6.31.5-0.1.1.i586 and removing the network manager client below ~/.kde4 makes it working again.

IMHO using ifup still works.

Using KDE 4.3.4 from repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Forgotten User puKLX2-vO_ 2010-01-06 10:53:05 UTC
Tried to reproduce it again, and here is the exact procedure:

- install requested kernel

  either (from zypper log)
    kernel-desktop|2.6.31.5-0.1.1|i586
    kernel-desktop-base|2.6.31.5-0.1.1|i586
    preload-kmp-desktop|1.1_2.6.31.8_0.1-6.9.3|i586

  or
    kernel-desktop|2.6.31.8-0.1.1|i586
    kernel-desktop-base|2.6.31.8-0.1.1|i586
    preload-kmp-desktop|1.1_2.6.31.8_0.1-6.9.3|i586

- log out from KDE4 session

- remove all network manager files from ~/.kde4/share/

- reboot

- log in to KDE4

- try to start a new WLAN network connection using the network manager client

It always fails using .8 and always succeeds using .5. The .5 takes about 10-20 seconds to establish the connection in the usual steps, the .8 pops up the window with the already filled in password every 10-20 seconds.

same thing here

using driver rt2860sta

my wireless card is:

01:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2860

as soon as i try to connect the system freeze.

many other bug reports here

http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/430012-system-freeze-after-last-kernel-update.html

move to critical since lots of users are affected, and because it cause the complete system freeze, without any way to "fix" it if not hard rebooting the machine

in reply to Comment #0

btw, of course it's not related to DE, it freeze with gnome, lxde and without any X server running

Using the eeepc 1000h (2GB of RAM) with oSUSE 11.2, Gnome DE and have this problem too. The latest kernelfix from Jan 23 2010 didn't solve the preoblem, so i got back to 2.6.31-5.
