Bugzilla – Bug 582982
OpenSUSE 11.3 - KDE4 session boots from Live CD and than hangs
Last modified: 2010-08-20 13:40:41 UTC
Created attachment 344621 [details] Hardware Info from YAST/OpenSUSE 11.1 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; ru; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) OpenSUSE 11.3 doesn't install - neither from KDE Live CD session nor from Install CD. System itself boots to KDE 4.4. But it is somewhat slow/not responsive. Tried to extract Hardware Info from YAST - it took about 10 minutes!.. And finally I could not save results to the file. I ahve on the same computer OpenSUSE 11.1 working fine. System is very responsive, Hardware Info passes in less than 1 minute. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot from OpenSUSE 11.3 Live CD 2. Choose Install from desktop 3. System would stop responding after few minutes Expected Results: System should be able to install from Live CD, or at least from boot CD-ROM.
Description of this system: HP Tablet PC Tx1100 (notebook with Tablet PC capabilities) Video: NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go 32M]' RAM: 512MB CPU: Pentium M 1000Mhz It also has stylus/touch-screen, but I was not able to get it working in any version of Linux tested.
Problem is still present in 11.3 Milestone3. System boot to KDE4, but than stops responding. Mouse is moving over the screen, but when I try to click on KDE menu ("K") - menu doesn't open. And USB flash drive from which I was booting has LED indicator blinking - system continously reads from (writes to?) flash/disk. Clicking on right mouse button doesn't bring context menu as well.
Created attachment 350808 [details] Xorg.0.log - OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone4 Problem is still present in OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4. Tested with KDE4 Live CD. After booting system I get KDE4 startup screen. Than system starts to slow-down. I was able to switch to console quickly, and extract Xorg.0.log via ftp.
Created attachment 350810 [details] dmesg output from OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone4 dmesg output - after booting and quick switching to console (Terminal 2) For some reason, I don't see command prompt/login in Terminal 1. It shows: ... Master Resource control: runlevel 5 has been reached Failed services in runlevel 5: vboxadd Skipped services in runlevel 5: nfs cifs Than - nothing, neither login nor other output. After switching back to graphics screen, I see black screen first. Than screen starts slowly to recover. Ifinally wa sable to click on K icon and get menu opened. After selecting Konsole, icon was jumping next to cursor about 20 sec., than Konsole window slowly appeared. Looks like system spends 99% of time in some other process.
Created attachment 350832 [details] Hardware Info from YaST for HP TC1100 notebook / OpenSUSE 11.3 MS4 GNOME Live CD Strange - I rebooted with GNOME LiveCD and system started, working without delays. It seems this bug can be similar to https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586157 But this notebook has (old) NVIDIA graphics, not ATI (as in bug #586157) It's also interesting to note that WACOM pen (stylus for Tablet PC) is working! I was never able to get it working before.
KDE 4.4 idle, but X.Org CPU load of 100%? Might be duplicate of Bug #584919.
Or some out of memory issue?
This computer has 512MB of RAM. According to http://en.opensuse.org/Sysreqs - Main memory: At least 256 MB; 512 MB recommended So, it is not a general memory issue. Besides, Fedora 12 works fine on that system.
I tried to install from openSUSE-DVD-Build0515-x86_64 (M4) and got the error too. It seems that something went wrong when initialising the x-server. Previous versions (M2, M3) run fine when updating the x-server but brought an error when running sax2 (No screens found). I'm running a nvidia 7900 on desktop or an intel graphic chip on a dell 830d notebook. Until M3 the nv and nvidia driver run fine on an updated system. Nvidia failed on M4 updated. I was not able to run nouveau on 11.3. Sax2 also failed on M2 and M3 on both, nvidia and intel.
Tested with 11.3 Milestone5 - KDE LiveCD boots and than system hangs - GNOME Live CD and works fine Therefor this bug looks similar to Bug 586157
Created attachment 354576 [details] OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone5 Xorg.0.log file OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone5 - Xorg.0.log file X.Org X Server 1.8.0 It seems NOUVEAU driver is working fine on this system. Tested with GNOME Live CD. As I wrote in previous comment - KDE Live CD freezes after startup. May be it's a KDE issue.
Is this still a problem with the final release of openSUSE 11.3?
On my computers this error does not occur with the final release of 11.3 .
Christian, final release of OpenSUSE 11.3 starts fine from Live CD, no hang-up. I was also able to install it, system works well after reboot. I close this bug report.
