Bugzilla – Bug 635172
Installation doesn't detect FormFactor correctly, Laptop pattern is not installed, networking configured with "ifup" (no KNetworkManager)

Created attachment 385966 [details] hwinfo output User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729) I did fresh OpenSUSE 11.3 (Release) installation on MSI U90 netbook. Formfactor is obviously laptop. Formfactor used by installer is Desktop, and Laptop pattern has not been installed. # hwinfo --sys 02: None 00.0: 10107 System [Created at sys.63] Unique ID: rdCR.n_7QNeEnh23 Hardware Class: system Model: "System" Formfactor: "desktop" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: thermal, fan are active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe thermal; modprobe fan" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install OpenSUSE 11.3 (used KDE version) 2. run hwinfo --sys in terminal Actual Results: a) Output of hwinfo --sys: Formfactor: "desktop" b) KNetworkManager is not presented in KDE panel, if you open YAST - "traditional ifup" network manged is used by default. Expected Results: FormFactor should be Laptop KNteowrkManager should be available in panel, and used to manage network connections. NOTE: Unexperienced Lunix user would be very confused when he(she) doesn't see Network Manager and can't connect to Wi-Fi network, or start/stop networking connections for wired network. This may cause wrong-footed bug reports (no networking available, etc.)
Not my bug
Vadim, So what's the affect when the Formfactor is "desktop"? And is it related to NetworkManager? Is it two bugs?
This is just about hardware detection. Vadim, please run 'hwinfo --sys --log=foo' and attach the log file.
Effect is that due to FormFactor: Desktop, YAST selects "Traditional network manager with ifup", NetworkMnaage ris not installed. And - due to this - you can't connect to Wireless network.
You don't need NM for wireless access. Anyway, please provide the log.
Created attachment 401446 [details] MSI S271 hwinfo --sys collected hwinfo (from OpenSUSE 11.4 factory system - which I have installed on this notebook now) ls also note that battery is reproted as 0% (empty), while Windows correctly reports that battery is charged. This is present both in OpenSUSE 11.3 and 11.4/Factory
The log says formfactor 'laptop'. So it's ok. Does this mean the problem does not exist in oS 11.4?
As far as I know, "laptop" pattern has not been installed in 11.4 I added it manually recently. Should "laptop" pattern be installed for "laptop" formfactor? P.S. I would reboot with OpenSUSE 11.3 and send you hwinfo --sys from that system.
If you could boot the os 11.4 install cd (or whatever you used for install), wait until yast has come up, switch to console 2 (Ctrl-Alt-F2), and there run 'hwinfo --sys' to check what form factor it detects. If it's _not_ 'laptop', please run 'hwinfo --sys --log=foo' and attach the log.
Any update?
