openSUSE Factory x86_64.
NVIDIA GF 9600GT.

Boot init 5. Running KDE 4.5.1.
After 5-10 minutes Xorg freezes. Keyboard doesn't work. I can move mouse cursor.
Reproducible always.

Comment 3 Kyrill Detinov 2010-09-09 14:45:03 UTC
I installed kernel-desktop-2.6.36-rc3-10 from Kernel:HEAD and xorg packages from X11:XOrg.

The problem is still here.
Comment 4 Stefan Dirsch 2010-09-09 14:48:18 UTC
As workaround please try with boot option 'nomodeset', which switches to nv driver instead.

I tried the nomodeset. The result is a white screen with a mouse courser when I'm expecting a logon prompt.

Where do I upload the log files here?
Comment 7 Stefan Dirsch 2010-09-12 17:40:57 UTC
Jamie, are you using autologin and compiz? That would explain the behaviour. compiz requires 3D support, otherwise the screen turn white. You can attach the logfiles to bugzilla ("Add an attachment").

So I turned off compiz, like you say and rebooted with nomodeset.

The system runs with the nomodeset nv driver without freezes for 2 hours.

So what did we prove the nv driver is better or a workaround?

No way, because you'll need dual Xeons just to play full video. The nv driver is brutal on the cpu.
Comment 12 Stefan Dirsch 2010-09-12 21:18:40 UTC
Using nv driver and disabling compiz is only considered a workaround.

Comment 14 Kyrill Detinov 2010-09-25 18:24:25 UTC
Updated to kernel-desktop-2.6.36-rc5.22.1 from Kernel:HEAD and latest xorg-x11-* and Mesa-* packages from X11:XOrg.

It seems, I have no problem now. Everything works OK.
Comment 15 Kyrill Detinov 2010-10-01 20:20:09 UTC
Stefan, I've updated today from X11:XOrg. No problem with nouveau at all.
Do you need any info or logs?
Comment 16 Stefan Dirsch 2010-10-02 00:24:51 UTC
Jamie, can you confirm that the issue has been fixed with the update to X11:Xorg and Kernel:HEAD?
Comment 17 Stefan Dirsch 2010-10-08 02:20:54 UTC
Jamie, I'm assuming the issue has been fixed meanwhile for you, i.e GeForce 210, as well. Otherwise please reopen. Thanks.
Comment 18 jamie m 2011-03-21 04:59:21 UTC
Not resolved with the following comment:

I had access to the machine last week. It was fully upated current with
the normal repositories of a normal desktop 11.3 gnome.

Unfortunately I had to choose not to spend the time with the xorg and kernel head suggestions to test for freezing.

I wont have access to that desktop again. I solved by swapping out G210 with a modern ATI. Sorry that I could not continue.
