Bugzilla – Bug 713902
Icon ugliness in gnome-shell "Applications" overview
Last modified: 2012-06-30 10:15:09 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0 Applications included in the default (12.1 M4+) Gnome pattern (and Live-CD) but displaying very blurred out and ugly icons on the Gnome-shell are noted here. Often this is due to the application not having icons of higher resolution (64x64, 128x128 and 256x256). List of applications with ugly icons:- 1. Desktop effects (probably will be dropped? Low priority) 2. Freecell 3. GNOME Phone Manager 4. Install/Remove Software 5. Linux 32-bit terminal 6. Midnight commander 7. Printing 8. XSane 9. xstroke Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Could someone please confirm if it is only an issue with some applications missing the high-res icons or something more than that? I can then go about fixing this application-by application. Thanks.
Atri, this indeed should be missing hires icon files. Thanks for picking this up.
Upstream bug for freecell icons: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657280

Unfortunately the entire suite of games with the package gnome-games does not install hi-res icons either (max size 48x48). Sigh...

Moving to 12.2: we won't ever release an online-update for fixed icons anyway :) Might be good to get a clear list again of what is still missing now.
On the default installation, and even after pulling in the rather large stack of recommended applications, almost all the icons look great on the shell now. There are a few exceptions of course:- 1. YaST icon: nothing we can do about that, bnc#722689 2. xstroke: coolo promised he would drop this from the LiveCD and default patterns, bnc#756777 3. qt4 settings (qtconfig): the worst icon of them all, but there is no way that I see to generate a hi-res icon for this one. We have to live with this one I guess. 4. Midnight Commander: no icon source or hi-res icon available. I found no way to do generate hi-res icons for this one. 5. openJDK stack: haven't had a very detailed look at this, but they only have low pixel icons in their tarball. ...and those are all the offending ones. I am also tracking individual (GNOME) apps for their icons on their upstream bug tracker:- 1. Latexila: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679174
Marking as fixed, after removing dependecny on bnc#722689.
