Description Ludwig Nussel 2012-03-12 08:53:31 UTC
Your friendly security team received the following report via oss-security.
Please respond ASAP.
The issue is public.

CVE-2012-1150

python dictionaries are prone to hash table collision attacks. Web services for example might store parameters of a GET or POST request in a dictionary. An attacker may use this to cause high CPU load

Comment 15 Marcus Meissner 2012-04-11 09:34:50 UTC
Jan, the patch is buggy.

it removes "os.urandom" from os.py , breaking everything that impots os.urandom

We rejected the updates.
Comment 16 Jan Matejek 2012-04-12 13:08:44 UTC
(In reply to comment #15)
> it removes "os.urandom" from os.py

...yes...

> breaking everything that impots os.urandom

...no. os.urandom became internal and this change causes two known breakages so far:
a) virtualenv, which has its own copy of the interpreter
b) mod_python (similar case, although in there it's probably because it links libpython statically). that hits SUSE Manager among other things

we don't distribute virtualenv so we don't care about that.
as for mod_python, rebuilding it and restarting apache does fix the issue. that means that new mod_python must be part of the update as well.

see comments on bug 755685 - it is the same issue, because it's caused by the same patch (fix for this very security vulnerability, incidentally)
Comment 17 Marcus Meissner 2012-04-19 07:44:19 UTC
We will proceed, but remove the superflous hunk removing os.urandom from os.py
to keep compatibility with static linked apps.

(Dirk wanted to do that I think).

I added this text to the patchinfo:
------------
The hash randomization fix is by default disabled to keep compatibility with
existing python code when it extracts hashes.

To enable the hash seed randomization you can use:
- pass -R to the python interpreter commandline.
- set the environment variable PYTHONHASHSEED=random to enable
it for programs. You can also set this environment variable to a fixed
hash seed by specifying a integer value between 0 and MAX_UINT.

In generally enabling this is only needed when malicious third parties can inject values into your hash tables.

I have executed the upstream test suite on the prepared maintenance version update

Category: security
SAT Patch No: 6220
MD5 sum: e032b2a6ff5657b1a6cd2c7d8d817eb5
SUBSWAMPID: 46898
Packager: jmatejek@suse.com
Bugs: 744287, 747125, 748079, 751714, 751718, 752375, 754447, 754547
SRCRPMs: python, python-base, python-doc

I have spotted a regression on s390x and ppc in test_dbm that seems to be related to this fix.

Failure is:

> test test_dbm failed -- Traceback (most recent call last):
>   File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/test/test_dbm.py", line 24, in test_keys
>     self.assert_(k in self.d)

I think it is related because of
http://bugs.python.org/issue13703#msg150543

Please advise.

i see what you're describing. where is the supposed problem?
Comment 29 Heiko Rommel 2012-05-10 15:23:16 UTC
None, this was only for providing a test case for the issue that triggered this bug initially :) Applying this test case makes me belief the issue is fixed. However, the failure of test_dbm needs to be still investigated.
Comment 30 Marcus Meissner 2012-05-10 21:19:39 UTC
Python-2.6.8/Modules/dbmmodule.c

static int
dbm_contains(register dbmobject *dp, PyObject *v)
{
    datum key, val;

    if (PyString_AsStringAndSize(v, (char **)&key.dptr,
                                 (Py_ssize_t *)&key.dsize)) {
        return -1;
    }

If you remove the (Py_ssize_t *) cast, the compiler will warn:
/usr/src/packages/BUILD/Python-2.6.8/Modules/dbmmodule.c: In function ‘dbm_contains’:
/usr/src/packages/BUILD/Python-2.6.8/Modules/dbmmodule.c:173: warning: passing argument 3 of ‘PyString_AsStringAndSize’ from incompatible pointer type

and he is right, key.dsize is differently sized than Py_ssize_t

python-bigendian.patch

patch that fixes it for me
Comment 32 Marcus Meissner 2012-05-10 21:39:12 UTC
(btw, python.spec has only a limited tests in its testsuite, if it would have had
test_dbm listed, it would have spotted it already)

As there is likelihood this is actuall used in customer setups we need
a resubmit I think with the fix.
Comment 33 Jan Matejek 2012-05-15 16:50:07 UTC
submitted for SLE11 in SR 19167, along with the missing fix for bug 754447

also enabled a couple more tests, including the test_dbm.
(in that case, i'm not sure it is a regression, this code was not touched in a long time and doesn't seem to be involved in the randomization in any way. if this worked before, and i'm not saying it did, the regression is probably triggered by a change outside Python)

The IgnoreEnvironmentFlag has nothing to do with this. it is already checked inside the Py_GETENV macro. The purpose of checking HashRandomizationFlag here is apparently an attempt to save a possible call to getenv.
It doesn't seem necessary, but it is not wrong.
It would work just as well without the "!Py_HashRandomizationFlag &&" part.

(The patch mentions IgnoreEnvironmentFlag because it needs to move checking this flag before checking the -R flag. It is removed from a later part of code, where it was originally.)
