Bugzilla – Bug 1160195
VUL-0: CVE-2019-14615: kernel-source: PSIRT-TA-201910-001: Intel Gen9 Graphics Data Leakage
Last modified: 2024-06-25 14:14:46 UTC
CRD: 2020-01-14
Linus published the repo now. The fix commit bc8a76a152c5f9ef3b48104154a65a68a8b76946 drm/i915/gen9: Clear residual context state on context switch I'm going to backport and push to relevant branches.
Now pushed to stable, SLE15-SP2, SLE15-SP1, SLE15 and cve/linux-4.4 branches.
As Takashi states, this public: https://git.kernel.org/linus/bc8a76a152c5f9ef3b48104154a65a68a8b76946 opening the bug but keeping c0 private for now
While the reported bug for gen9 has been addressed on all relevant branches, there is still an issue for gen7 and gen7.5. I keep this opened until the latter problem is addressed.

For gen7 and 7.5, there are a few fixes landed in 5.7. The main fix is 47f8253d2b8947d79fd3196bf96c1959c0f25f20 drm/i915/gen7: Clear all EU/L3 residual contexts and prerequisite ee2413eeed767d1fb794651e63e45c5e292c8180 drm/i915: Add mechanism to submit a context WA on ring submission and some followups cc328351e1e44c4373fabb6f98f0b5d636890225 drm/i915/gt: Wait for the wa batch to be pinned a62774782b994026ac3198bf115717d55d536166 drm/i915/gt: Restrict gen7 w/a batch to Haswell But it's not so trivial to backport those even to SLE15-SP2 kernel, unfortunately, and no stable fixes seem available yet.
The remaining issue about Gen 7 and 7.5 seem to be negligible in the end. I asked Intel devs and below is the explanation: """ In short, no we did not backport this to the stable kernels, and never intended to. Historical context: At the time Gen7/7.5 were conceived, GPU's were considered single-user assets and they did not have the notion of context isolation at all. On Gen7/7.5 all gfx clients lived in a single shared VA space (no full-ppgtt support), and only kernel assets were ring-fenced (what we call aliased-ppgtt). This is still true today - the hardware (as with most, perhaps all other GPU hardware of the time) just was not designed with memory isolation in mind. Without basic memory isolation, hardening against EU residual leakage has minimal payback. When we first published the EU residual isolation patches, we believed we had line of sight to retrospectively enabling full-ppgtt on Gen7/7.5 and the EU residual hardening was deemed a worthwhile addition to mainline. However, the extent of the changes required to enable full-ppgtt and the extent to which they depend on other later patches meant that it was not safe or practical to backport gen7 full-ppgtt to the stable kernels. So, it was decided to add EU residual hardening only to mainline, where the new full-ppgtt feature was expected to land at some point. The story for Gen8/9 is very different. These were productized with full memory isolation from the get-go, and the EU residual leakage is a genuine bug in this case. That's why it was important to backport the gen8/9 fixes. In summary, Intel recommends that customers adopt this fix where it is available going forward, but will not be backporting to the stable kernels. """ So we're done. Reassigned back to security team.
