Bugzilla – Bug 1184211
VUL-0: CVE-2020-36322: kernel-source: FUSE driver can confuse kernel by changing inode type
Last modified: 2024-06-25 15:55:03 UTC
When FUSE userspace driver reports inconsistent information about an inode, the kernel driver will call mark_bad_inode() which changes inode file type to S_IFREG. This can confuse other parts of the kernel that are possibly using the inode and cause various odd behavior - one such case got found by syzbot: https://syzkaller.appspot.com/bug?extid=f427adf9324b92652ccc Upstream report and discussion here: https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/11/23/166 The problem affects all kernels with FUSE - i.e., everything since 2.6.14. Problem is fixed upstream by commit 5d069dbe8aaf ("fuse: fix bad inode") and there's also a followup fixup 775c5033a0d164 ("fuse: fix live lock in fuse_iget()").
Luis, could you please backport these. Is there a CVE associated with the vulnerability?
FWIW, the fix up commit 775c5033a0d164 is found in bsc#1184194 and CVE-2021-28950 was already assigned. But for the original fix, commit 5d069dbe8aaf, there has been no CVE assigned, AFAIK, and we need to ask our security team to handle for requesting a CVE.
(In reply to Takashi Iwai from comment #3) > FWIW, the fix up commit 775c5033a0d164 is found in bsc#1184194 and > CVE-2021-28950 was already assigned. Thanks, Takashi. I'll update the patch metadata with this CVE number for all the branches. > But for the original fix, commit 5d069dbe8aaf, there has been no CVE > assigned, AFAIK, and we need to ask our security team to handle for > requesting a CVE. I assumed this was being handled, but I'm adding a 'needinfo' to the security team to confirm.

Sorry, this dropped of my radar. Will get a CVE for 5d069dbe8aaf now.
making this bug public as the commit is public
I'm reassigning to the security team as all the branches are now "ready to be merged", after updating all the CVE numbers.
