Bugzilla – Bug 1193727
VUL-0: CVE-2021-4083: kernel-source-azure, kernel-source-rt, kernel-source: kernel: fget: check that the fd still exists after getting a ref to it
Last modified: 2024-06-25 16:30:05 UTC
rh#2029923 Another possible race with Unix domain socket garbage collection that can lead to read memory after free. Older more or less similar issue is the commit cbcf01128d0a ("af_unix: fix garbage collect vs MSG_PEEK"). This race happens if the file handler in the process of being closed, the close() could happen before fget(), and then garbage collector can get confused by seeing this situation of having seen a file not having any remaining external references and then seeing it being attached to an fd. Reference and upstream patch: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=054aa8d439b9 References: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2029923 http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2021-4083
This fix commit is only present on the stable branch. However, the commit introducing the bug is not mentioned, and I think it will not be trivial to find.
It seems to be an additional fix for issue bnc#1193731.
Yes, it seems to be an additional fix for the vulnerability described in bsc#1193731. Looking into our branches this behavior of file tables seems to date all the way back to at least 2.6.32. I'm not sure how far back the AF_UNIX problem goes. Let's wait for networking guys to see how far back they decide to backport the AF_UNIX fix and I can follow their suit with this fix.
Pushed the fix to cve/linux-4.4, cve/linux-4.12, SLE15-SP2 branches. That should cover all the newer products that are affected. Still clarifying with networking guys whether the fix is needed in cve/linux-3.0 and cve/linux-2.6.32 branches.

Still clarifying with > networking guys whether the fix is needed in cve/linux-3.0 and > cve/linux-2.6.32 branches. Jack, it seems that fix needs another patch since it regressed one benchmark test: commit e386dfc56f837da66d00a078e5314bc8382fab83 Author: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Date: Fri Dec 10 14:00:15 2021 -0800 fget: clarify and improve __fget_files() implementation What do you think? If yes, we need to include this one too when creating a livepatch. Thanks!
Hum, thanks for the pointer. Probably it is worth it to backport the fix where feasible. Since it is basically just a code reorganization, it should be doable. I'll look into that.

I have pushed the performance fixup to SLE15-SP4, cve/linux-5.3, cve/linux-4.12, and cve/linux-4.4 branches. All should be done from my side, reassigning back to security team.
