Comment 1 Carlos López 2023-04-05 15:49:44 UTC
We have CONFIG_NET_9P_XEN enabled in:
- master
- stable
- cve/linux-5.3
- cve/linux-4.12

71ebd71921e4 ("xen/9pfs: connect to the backend") was introduced in 4.11:
$ git describe 71ebd71921e4
v4.11-1490-g71ebd71921e4

The patch has not been merged yet.

And SLE15-SP4 & SLE15-SP5-GA.

This was merged as
> ea4f1009408e ("9p/xen : Fix use after free bug in xen_9pfs_front_remove due to race condition") v6.3-rc7~34^2~1

(Use SLE15-SP4 to get it into SLE15-SP5 via automatic merge.)

And I also wonder whether xen_9pfs_front_remove() invocation is anyhow under control of an unprivileged user (Cc Jürgen)? (Possibly CVE dispute?)

No, xen_9pfs_front_remove() can be called only during shutdown of the system, as hotplugging Xen PV-9pfs devices isn't supported by Xen. Even if it were supported, it would need a Xen host admin's action to trigger it.

So I don't see how a CVE could be appropriate.
Comment 8 Jan Kara 2023-08-31 11:52:23 UTC
Reassigning back to security team because the fix is present in proactively maintained kernels and the bug requires full machine control to trigger so we aren't going to backport it to older kernels.
Comment 9 Jan Kara 2023-09-11 14:57:11 UTC
Apparently I got confused and the fix ea4f1009408e ("9p/xen : Fix use after free bug in xen_9pfs_front_remove due to race condition") didn't get backported even to proactively maintained branches yet. Returning back to Juergen, can you please backport? Thanks!

Comment 18 Petr Mladek 2023-11-30 15:25:21 UTC
It seems that the fix has been backported to all affected branches
back to 4.12 based kernels.

=> reassigning back to the security team for further tracking.

Note that the patches reference CVE-2023-1859 so that there
is not longer need to dispute the CVE.
