Description William McCanless 2006-08-15 04:39:56 UTC
First install of OS lost yast2 ncurses after on-line update. Performed fresh install (second install) then tried running updat by selecting a few patches at a time to see which caused the problem. Worked well at first, then patches started to be refused. Worked around refused patches until only two were left. "libzypp update" and "yast2-online-update: Restart YOU in installation workflow." These refused to install, and now yast2 shuts down if I even select a package, or when I click "accept" for updates.

OK... let's do this step by step.

What do you mean you `lost' it? Was it deleted?

What exactly does YaST say at startup (start if from a shell) and attach the complete /var/log/YaST2 as tarball here. I suppose the installation of the zypp and/or YOU-patch caused the problem? What do you mean they refused to install?

First install: I ran update from the panel menu. It did not install all the patches, so I went to yast2 online update to check in more detail. ncurses had an error message whitch there were no installation sources for the patch. This didn't seem likely to me, so I tried "install anyway" and apparently ncurses was deleted instead of patched. Knowing this was my fault, I did a new install and started again.
I had similar problems with the patches, but this time I avoided installing any with error messages. With each patch installed, I seemed to get less error messages on those left uninstalled. By picking and choosing,I was able to install all but these two patches. I did all this from the graphical interface, and now I get no messages on these two patches, but when I click on 'accept' the window immediately closes. Now if I try to install, uninstall, or update packages dthe window closes as soon as I select the check box.
I, also expect the problem to be with these two patches. I found info on the net which indicates if I had installed these before I ran update from the panel menu, things might have worked out better. But, I've only been working with SuSE linux since last September, and lack experience to know the best way to proceed.
Added note to Yast problems: Tried to install missing updates from Desktop menu>system>configuration>Install Software. After a moderate wait, received success message, then ZMD doesn't seem to be working message. Yast says update still needs to be installed.

Attach /var/log/YaST2 as tarball, please.

How do I attach files to this reply? I sent logs to mgross@suse.de because "create attachment" below said it was for apps or patches. --ED--

This problem has been resolved, but I can't tell what happened. I installed another distro on my second HD. This required changes to the boot loader to show choices. Afterward, when I checked yast2, everything was suddenly working again. I don't know enough to even guess what happened. Should I mark this FIXED?
